Manchester-based stylist and content creator Hannah Shaw is the layering expert you need to follow on Instagram if you're looking for some serious fall style inspiration. Her soft-colored outfits are like a warm matcha latte for our ever-screaming feeds, and I love the way she wears everything I love - colors, prints, textures - with a feminine, delicate twist. Today, Hannah and I discuss what she looks for in a fashion brand, and new ways to wear those pieces you've had for a long time.
When did you become interested in fashion?
I’d probably say that I’ve always been interested in fashion - my parents always say that they used to let me dress myself and allowed me to wear whatever I wanted. From what I can remember, though, I’d probably say I was about 15/16 when I started to dress differently from your typical mainstream fashion and started to use my clothes as a way of expressing my personality.
As a stylist, does sustainability play a part in your job?
I’d say for me, on a personal level, it does play a part in my job: I like to showcase a different range of clothing on my Instagram and I’m definitely not scared of wearing (or posting) an outfit more than once. I also think brands are more aware of sustainability and they are trying to improve their practices. It’s also important to remember that at the end of the day, we all need money to live and if that means working for a fast-fashion brand then I have to let my views not affect my work. Just because I don’t agree with their ethics, doesn’t mean I wouldn’t work for them (I hope that makes sense!) .
When it comes to shopping for yourself, what do you look for in a fashion brand?
I like to look at the quality of the clothing and think to myself ‘how many times will I wear this?’, ‘will I still be likely to wear it next year too?’, before I make any decision as to what I will buy from that brand. I also definitely try and also buy clothing that can be worn throughout all of the seasons; that way I can fully get my wear out of my clothes.
Do you have any tips for someone who has clothes they want to wear more often or style differently, but is having trouble thinking outside the box?
I strongly believe that layering up clothes is the way forward and also not being scared of mixing and matching your clothes too.
Just simple ways like putting a jumper over your dress to make it into a skirt, wearing a t-shirt or roll neck under a dress, adding necklaces, hair accessories, the list is endless.
Another way is tailoring your own clothes… cut the legs off your old jeans to make shorts, cropped trousers etc, chop the bottom off t-shirts to make them cropped. Or even just experiment with the clothes that you’ve got and have fun with your wardrobe. Try not to focus too much on the fact that you’ve worn the item before or that it is old! Most of my wardrobe I bought years ago and I just mix it up a bit.
And finally, the tough question: what's your favorite item from your closet at the moment?
I think this coat might be my favourite item! I bought it about 4 years ago and it comes out of my wardrobe every single winter… I also wear it all year round, really, as the English weather is never really reliable! I feel like this colour is also really popular for autumn so it is definitely a keeper.
